To Prepare: In-Car Instructor to teach Modules 6-10 of the ten in-car modules of the National Institute’s Traffic Safety Education Curriculum.

Qualifications: Teacher candidate must meet current standards. Teacher must have completed Tier One and successfully completed at least 6 months of work experience teaching in-vehicle modules one-five.

Time Structure: This will be a 45-hour course, conducted in no less than 4 weeks.

The teacher candidate will:
  • Acquire risk-prevention driving habits
  • Demonstrate space-management skills
  • Learn how to use and teach the Key Behavioral Patterns for the following five modules:

Course Content and Key Behavioral Patterns:
The teacher candidate must demonstrate knowledge and successful in-vehicle performance as a driver and as a teacher of the following:
    Module 6 Key Behavioral Patterns
  1. See red lights as closed zones
  2. Adjust speed to arrive into green lights
  3. Search intersection 45 degrees
  4. Left turn at green light - 4 checks
  5. Using ABC’s of Zone Control effectively
  6. Evaluate need for lane changing
  7. Move by lane positions
  8. Time arrival into open zones
  9. Key steps for backing into space
    • Side position
    • Forward position
    • 45 degree target
    • Back into pivot point
    • When car is straight, straighten tires
    • Back to rear reference

    Module 7 Key Behavioral Patterns
  1. Respond to stop/yield signs
  2. Respond to traffic signals
  3. Respond to traffic signs - regulatory/warning
  4. See warning signs as cue- check rear / LOS POT / escape path
  5. Respond to pavement markings
  6. Demonstrate right of way laws
  7. See and respond to curves in target areas
  8. Evaluate traction envelope
  9. Evaluate left / right zones
  10. Get best lane position
  11. Look into curves
  12. Use brake/accelerator effectively
  13. Evaluate POT’s at hill crests
  14. Hill crest lane position
  15. Keep four seconds of time
  16. Adjust Closure Rate to front vehicle
  17. Use practice commentary effectively

  1. Identify Fixed Side Zone Changes
  2. Identify Moving Side Zone Changes

  5. Check rear zone before leaving traffic flow
  6. Use of signals
  7. Parking on a hill
  8. Putting car in motion while on an upgrade
  9. Parallel parking - key steps
    • Rear zone control
    • Stop even with space - go forward
    • Rear pivot point
    • Check left/front corner swing
    • Back to 45 degree angle
    • Creep and time clearance
    • Straighten tires - Center car
